● cariama nom masculin (tupi sariama) Oiseau gruiforme des steppes d'Amérique du Sud, au bec crochu, se nourrissant d'insectes et de reptiles.

⇒CARIAMA, subst. masc.
ORNITH. Grand oiseau à longues pattes, de teinte grise, au bec un peu crochu, vivant en Amérique du Sud. L'immensité des campos retentit de la grande voix du cariama (MICHELET, L'Insecte, 1857, p. 159).
Prononc. et Orth. Seule transcr. ds LAND. 1834 : ka-ri-a-ma. BESCH. 1845 enregistre la forme cariame. Lar. 19e et Nouv. Lar. ill. donnent également cariana synon. de cariama. Étymol. et Hist. 1770-83 (BUFFON, Hist. naturelle, t. 7, p. 326). Empr. prob. par l'intermédiaire du port. cf. esp. cariama ds AL.) au tupi siriema, sariama, çariama « muni d'une crête ». La forme erronée cariama est due à G. MARYGRAFF VAN LIEBSTAD, Historiae rerum naturalium Brasiliae, 1648; cf. angl. cariama 1860, çariama 1836 ds NED, s.v. seriema. Fréq. abs. littér. :1.
